Mathematics Education may be studied as part of a major in Mathematics towards a BSc, BSc(Hons), PGDipSci, MSc or PhD. You do not have to be a mathematics teacher to study Mathematics Education towards these degrees or programmes.

The Master of Professional Studies (Mathematics Education) is designed for mathematics teachers who wish to study and research their classroom practice. The major brings together research, mathematical knowledge, and professional experience to develop critical approaches to mathematics teaching and learning and is jointly offered by the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Education. Mathematics teachers may also study mathematics education as part of a major in Mathematics towards a BSc(Hons), PGDipSci, MSc or PhD.



Structure and prerequisites

Master of Professional Studies in Mathematics Education (MProfStuds)

The prerequisites for this programme are:

  • A bachelors degree or a bachelors (honours) degree
  • A professional teaching qualification recognised as equivalent to one year’s advanced study
  • At least three years' post-qualification teaching involving mathematics
  • Any prerequisites for the courses in the subject area in which they wish to enrol (at least one 200-level Mathematics or Statistics content paper). E

Entry is with the approval of the Director of the programme.


The 90 point Research Portfolio will be jointly undertaken with the Faculties of Science and Education, and will be jointly supervised by members of the Mathematics Education Unit in the former, and members of Curriculum & Pedagogy in the latter.


Career opportunities

Graduates of this programme will be better able to be senior practitioners in mathematics education at primary, secondary or tertiary level, and to take on positions of responsibility that involve mentoring other teaching staff.

In particular, it is expected that graduates of the MProfStuds (Mathematics Education) will be suited for Lead Teacher or HoD Mathematics roles in secondary schools.

This degree may provide the foundation for PhD study.
