Life on a student budget

Living on a student budget can be difficult, but there are plenty of affordable (and free!) things to do around Auckland while you are studying. Here are ten examples of what you can do.

  1. Visit Auckland Art Gallery
    Cost: Free
You can find the Auckland Art Gallery at the bottom of Albert Park. There’s always something new to enjoy - whether it be a special exhibition or a public lecture - not to mention the 15,000 artworks in their permanent collection.
  2. Auckland Domain
    Cost: Free
Only a 10 minute walk from the city campus, the Auckland Domain is a great spot to get some fresh air and exercise!  There are plenty of walking/running routes to explore, and ample field space for those wanting to kick around a ball.  If you're looking for something a bit more relaxing (and away from the busyness of Albert Park), it's also a wonderful picnic spot and home to the Auckland Wintergardens (free and open to the public).
  3. Auckland War Memorial Museum
    Cost: Free for Auckland residents
Conveniently located in the middle of Auckland Domain, the Auckland War Memorial Museum is a great way to spend a rainy day.  It's extensive range of exhibitions can easily keep you entertained for an entire day - or you could explore over a series of afternoons. Entry is free, but you will need to bring evidence that you’re an Auckland resident.
  4. Wynyard Quarter
    Cost: variable
Wynard Quarter has something for everyone! There is plenty to see or do with markets on the weekends, outdoor Silo cinema playing classics from 9pm (in Summer), and a variety of restaurants to suit all budgets. Just walk down Queen St, turn left at the ferry building, keep walking, and you’re there. There’s also a fish and chip shop right at the end at the fish markets- cheap meal to take outside and enjoy in the sunshine.
  5. Head to Mission Bay
    Cost: $ bus fare
Mission Bay is a popular beach to relax at on a sunny day. There are a number of busses that depart from Britomart taking you directly to and from Mission Bay - it's only 2 stages, and if you feel like stretching your legs further take a 15 minute walk to the next beach, Kohimarama.
  6. Climb up a volcano
    Cost: Free
Auckland is a perfect for taking a volcanic stroll, so why not head to Mt. Eden, Mt. Wellington or One Tree Hill for a casual day out? Even better - take a picnic and make sure you’re at the top for the sunset.
  7. Volunteering
    Cost: free
Volunteering is not only a great way to help support a cause that matters to you, it also adds incredibly valuable skills to your CV that will benefit you once you graduate. So, why not join the University’s Volunteer Hub and make a difference in your community.
  8. Metrolanes Bowling
    Cost: Less than $20
Situated at the heart of Queen Street, Metrolanes bowling is great for a group activity. There are a range of other activities also - so head on down, and take a look around.
  9. Auckland Zoo
    Cost: $23 students
The Auckland Zoo is only two stages from the City, and for $23 you can get an entire day of enjoyment! Go as a group and with plenty of spaces to stop and relax, don't forget to pack a picnic lunch.
