Scholarships, prizes and awards

Postgraduates Science students can apply for a diverse range of scholarships, awards and prizes.

Guaranteed Postgraduate Scholarships


  • Scholarships are usually awarded on the basis of grade point average (GPA). Full information is available on the University of Auckland scholarships and awards website
  • If you are employed, it is advisable to approach your employer about funding for your postgraduate study. Employers may have funding available through a training budget, or they may know of other possible sources of funding. Depending on their circumstances, some students may be eligible for a student loan or allowance. StudyLink, a service of the Ministry of Social Development, has the responsibility of processing Student Loans and Allowances. Orion Awards for Excellence in Computer Science

Value: $2,500
Level: Postgraduate
Tenure: 1 year
Closing date: 10 August
For a student who is in his or her final year of a GradDipSci (Computer Science), PGDipSci (Computer Science), BSc (Hons), BTech (IT), or MSc Degree in Computer Science at the University of Auckland and who demonstrates the greatest potential to become an outstanding professional in the area of Information Technology and Computer Science.

Ministry for Primary Industries/NIWA Postgraduate Scholarships in Quantitative Fisheries Science

Value: up to $20,000 per annum for up to two years
Level: Masters
Closing date: 20 September
For masters students in the field of quantitative fisheries science, particularly stock assessment modelling. Applicants with majors or minors in mathematics, statistics or biology are encouraged to apply. Applicants with a strong quantitative background, particularly in applied statistics combined with marine biology will be favoured.

Geology Centennial Awards

Value: up to $600
Level: Honours, Masters
Tenure: 1 year
Closing date: 30 September
The Awards will give financial help with research-related expenses connected with thesis work in Geology by masters and BSc (Hons) students.

Natasha Divich Memorial Award

Value: $3,000
Level: Masters
Tenure: 1 year
Closing date: 30 September
To assist students undertaking thesis work for a masters degree in Geology.

R.N. Brothers Memorial Award

Value: $3,000
Level: Postgraduate
Tenure: 1 year
Closing date: 30 September
The Award is intended to assist a postgraduate research student to undertake field-based geological research in New Zealand or the SW Pacific.

George Mason Scholarship in Biological Sciences

Value: $25,000 plus compulsory fees
Level: Doctoral
Tenure: up to 36 months, or until submission of the thesis (whichever is the lesser)
Closing date: 1 October
To fund a PhD student researching in the general field of plant science or biological processess impacting on plants, in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Auckland.

George Mason Scholarships in Marine Science

Value: $5,000 per annum
Level: Postgraduate Diploma, Masters
Tenure: Tenable for one year or two years as the Selection Committee determines
Closing date: 1 October
To support postgraduate research work in Marine Science.

To cover expenses for research in Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Medical Sciences.

Value: $12,000
Level: Masters
Tenure: 1 year

To assist students undertaking a masters degree in Mathematics or Statistics at the University of Auckland.

R J Mowat Memorial Scholarship in Geology

Value: $1,500
Level: Postgraduate
Tenure: 1 year
Closing date: 1 November
To support BSc Honours or MSc student in the School of Environment, and who is embarking on thesis work in sedimentology, stratigraphy, palaeontology or marine geology.

Jane and Rebecca Hulst Memorial Scholarship

Value: Up to $7,500 per annum
Level: Postgraduate
Tenure: 2 years
Closing date: 1 November
To foster and encourage masters study in Speech and Language Therapy Practice, with an emphasis on children with disabilities.

Michael J Fox Foundation Rapid Response Innovation Award

Value: up to $75,000
Level: Postgraduate
Closing date: No pre-proposal stage. Ongoing online submission of proposals. Funding decisions advised within six weeks of submission date.
Rapid Response Innovation Awards are designed to support projects with little to no existing preliminary data, but that have the potential to significantly impact our understanding or treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

New Zealand-European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST)

Funds up to $5,000 each to supplement travel and subsistence expenses for NZ and European researchers.
