Research | Current

Nick is director of the Exercise Nutrition and Metabolism Laboratory. His group investigate the brain’s role in controlling metabolism and fatigue during exercise. The team are particularly interested in 'brain foods' involved in energy signaling that modify fatigue and improve health. Associate Professor Gant’s laboratory is an F-MARC accredited Centre of Excellence, he is a principal within the Centre for Brain Research and leads the interdisciplinary Human Performance research theme within the Food & Health Programme. His research is PBRF A-rated (2018 Quality Evaluation) and is currently funded by the Royal Society Marsden Fund, the Health Research Council of New Zealand, the Auckland Medical Research Foundation, Lottery Health Research, the Maurice & Phyllis Paykel Trust, and several industry partnerships.

Teaching | Current

Associate Professor Gant is the Deputy Head and Academic Programme Leader for the department of Exercise Sciences. He also coordinates three Exercise Physiology and Nutrition courses within his department and delivers lectures in courses hosted by the School of Biological Sciences, School of Medical Sciences and School of Population Health.

Nick holds a University of Auckland Teaching Excellence Award for Early Career Teaching Excellence (2011), the Dean’s award for Teaching Excellence (2010) and several prizes for science communication. Nick delivered a 2012 Vice-Chancellor’s Public Lecture in the series: Exercise is Medicine.
