Professor Winston Byblow

Biography

I am Director of the Movement Neuroscience Laboratory at The University of Auckland where I mentor postgraduate students, postdoctoral fellows and mid-career academics. My research specialisation is in neurophysiology, neurorehabilitation, neuromodulation and neural plasticity, and human brain imaging relevant to recovery of motor function after stroke and movement disorders such as dystonia and Parkinson’s disease. I routinely serve on scientific and grant awarding committees including the Biomedical Science Panel for the Marsden Fund, on biomedical assessing committees for the Health Research Council of NZ, and on the Medicine and Public Health Panel for the Tertiary Education Committee (TEC) National Panel. I am co-Editor-in-Chief of Experimental Brain Research, Springer’s longest running neuroscience serial, and an Editorial Board member of several journals. I frequently gives public lectures on topics as part of International Brain Awareness Week and Neurological Foundation appeal week.

Research | Current

I have numerous projects on offer in areas of motor neurophysiology, neurorehabilitation, neuromodulation and neural plasticity, the effects of physical activity and acute exercise on brain function, human brain imaging relevant to recovery of motor function after stroke  and Parkinson’s disease. If you are intersted in pursuing a PhD on one of these topics under my supervision, the University will offer a guaranteed Doctroal scholarship to applicants with GPE of 8.0 or above.
