Applied Psychology

The Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Psychology is for graduates who have completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Science or Arts (PGDipSci/PGDipArts) and a Master of Science (MSc) or Master of Arts (MA) in Psychology in the areas of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), and Industrial, Work and Organisational Psychology (IWO) only. ABA students may also be accepted into this prtogramme with a Bachelor of Arts or Science with Honours (BAHons/BScHons) and a a Master of Science (MSc) or Master of Arts (MA) in Psychology.

Applied Psychology is designed to prepare graduates for professional practice in the application of these sub-disciplines of psychology.

Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Psychology (PGDipAppPsy)

Prerequisite: 

ABA - PGDipSci/PGDipArts and MSc/MA, required ABA courses, and agreement of a Psychology staff member to supervise the practicum

IWO- PGDipSci/PGDipArts or BScHons/BAHons and MSc/MA, required IWO courses, and agreement of a Psychology staff member to supervise the practicum

Requirements:

• 60 points from PSYCH 651 A & B Practicum
• 60 points in total from courses chosen from PSYCH 701-763 with the approval of the Head of Department of Psychology.

Industrial, Work and Organisational Psychology graduates typically go in to external organisational psychology consulting roles or in-house roles around organisational development, human resources and capital, recruitment selection and assessment, performance, leadership development, talent management, or other similar fields. Some also go into more general roles in human resources/human capital or research analysis roles.

Successful completion of the three-year IWO programme also provides eligibility to apply to the New Zealand Psychologists Board (NZPB) to be a Registered Psychologist.

The effectiveness of ABA has been shown in a wide range of areas including education, special education, dementia care, organisational management, parent training, occupational safety, sports psychology, and clinical psychology. Worldwide demand for competent behaviour analysts exceeds current supply, especially in the education of, and remediation of behavioural problems in, children.

The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) administers the international professional certification process for behaviour analysts. The 3-year ABA programme meets the educational requirements of the BACB professional credential Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA). Since 2006, our BACB-approved practicum courses are accepted toward the BCBA eligibility requirements in the Supervised Independent Fieldwork experience category. Successful completion of the three-year programme will also make a graduate eligible to apply to the New Zealand Psychologists Board (NZPB) to be a Registered Psychologist.
