Undergraduate Environmental Management

At undergraduate level environmental management is not a named degree, but students can focus on environmental studies within their BSc or BA major in geography or environmental science. Here environmental management involves understanding and managing the effects of human activities on the environment.

In the geography undergraduate programme, the environmental management pathway provides students with a critical understanding of landscape change and sustainable resource use, governance and policy. Following geographic traditions these approaches to management are grounded in analysis of environmental values, public participation and Treaty of Waitangi considerations. Students develop a critical understanding of human and environmental relationships; relationships between scientific and local knowledge; the policy framework for environmental planning including the Resource Management Act; strategies to motivate and involve the public in decision-making; Treaty of Waitangi obligations. The courses taught in this pathway can be combined with courses in the Environmental Science undergraduate programme to enable students to better understand and manage environmental effects.

Postgraduate Environmental Management

Environmental Management emphasises the use of interdisciplinary knowledge to move toward sustainable development. The goal is to provide students with a sound understanding of the ecological, social, economical and institutional factors that underlie environmental problems and drive change.

The programmes offer a comprehensive range of environmental management courses that look at the knowledge, tools and methods that can solve environmental problems and monitor success. The core courses and some of the electives are taught in modular form to encourage participation by people already in the workforce.
