Biomedical Common Year or Overlapping Year
The Biomedical Common Year or Overlapping Year is a good option for students who are interested in Biology and related subjects but are undecided about which programme of study they are interested in. The programme consistes of a number of core first-year courses and one general Education course to prepare you for a Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Optometry or Bachelor of Technology programme. The Common Year may also give you the option of transferring to study in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences.
To complete the Common Year or Overlapping Year, students must complete the following courses:
- BIOSCI 101 Essential Biology: From genomes to Organisms
- BIOSCI 106 Foundations of Biochemistry
- BIOSCI 107 Biology for Biomedical Science: Cellular Processes and Development
- CHEM 110 Chemistry of the Living World
- MEDSCI 142 Biology for Biomedical Science: Organ Systems
- PHYSICS 160 Physics for the Life Sciences
- Plus one elective course (Students wishing to apply for Medicine from this Year must include POPLHLTH 111 as one of their electives.)
- Plus one General Education course (if applying for entry to medicine)
Studying these courses (sometimes with the addition of a few further courses) can open up a number of study options and pathways within science in year two including:
- Bachelor of Science
- Bachelor of Optometry
- Bachelor of Technology in Biotechnology
- BSc majoring in Biological Sciences
- BSc majoring in Food Science and Nutrition
- BSc majoring in Pharmacology
- BSc majoring in Physiology
- BSc majoring in Sport and Exercise Science
- BSc specialising in Bioinformatics
- BSc specialising in Marine Science
- BSc specialising in Biomedical Science
It may also give you the option of transferring to study in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences. Students who take the Common Year courses and gain a B+ average across the prescribed first year courses will be eligible to be considered for an interview for Medicine. Those who complete this Common Year may also apply for entry to other health professional programmes such as the Bachelor of Nursing or the Bachelor of Pharmacy.
