Faculty of Science – Leading creativity and innovation in the sciences

Joint Graduate Schools

The Faculty of Science has established three joint graduate schools in cooperation with industry leaders in their field. Combining academic excellence and an industry perspective, the schools cover a wide spectrum from Plant and Food Science to Biodiversity and Biosecurity, and Coastal and Marine Science.

The faculty’s aim is to create more opportunities for its staff to collaborate with Crown Research Institutes through shared supervision and research, and to increase scholarship opportunities, improved access to research questions considered highly relevant to New Zealand, and employment opportunities for our postgraduate students.

Joint Graduate School in Plant and Food Science

In November 2010, The University of Auckland and Plant & Food Research jointly created the Joint Graduate School in Plant and Food Science, the first school of its kind in New Zealand. The Joint Graduate School offers postgraduate students the opportunity to undertake masters or PhD research of direct relevance to the New Zealand primary production and food industries. As well as scientific expertise, the school offers students access to the University’s research programmes and to Plant & Food’s research infrastructure across the country.

Joint Graduate School in Biodiversity and Biosecurity

The University of Auckland and Landcare Research are New Zealand’s two leading research organisations in environmental science and ecology. They have combined their resources and expertise to create the Joint Graduate School in Biodiversity and Biosecurity, an extension of the existing Centre for Biodiversity and Biosecurity, which was established 6 years ago between the two institutions. The Joint Graduate School offers postgraduate students the opportunity to undertake masters or PhD research to help maintain New Zealand’s terrestrial ecosystems and to enable our natural flora, fauna and fungi to flourish.

Joint Graduate School in Coastal and Marine Science

The University of Auckland and the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) have joined forces to establish the Joint Graduate School in Coastal and Marine Science. The graduate school offers postgraduate degrees in coastal and marine science, co-supervised by researchers at the University and NIWA, to increase the number of students educated in both areas for employment in academia and industry. The University’s particular strengths in coastal science and marine ecology combined with NIWA’s complementary expertise in oceanography and modeling broadens the range of research topics available to students and encourages further scientific collaboration between the two institutions.

This Joint Graduate School is still in establishment phase. A web link will be available soon.
