Psychology

Programme information

Psychology is offered as a subject major for the BSc at undergraduate level, and the BSc (Hons), MSc, PGDipSci and PhD at postgraduate level. It is also possible to study Psychology as part of a conjoint degree, and as a GradDipSci.

Psychology can also be studied as part of an Arts degree.

The Department of Psychology also offers specialisations in Health Psychology and Speech Science at postgraduate level, a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Psychology and a Master of Speech Language Therapy Practice (MSLTPrac).

Undergraduate Psychology

Psychology is the study of the mind and behaviour. It is a wide subject that ranges from, on the one hand, a strictly quantitative and scientific approach to, on the other, a more qualitative and personal approach. It also ranges from the strongly theoretical to the eminently practical.

Modern psychologists base their theories on observable and repeatable behavioural data, ranging from counts of simple behaviour in animals to verbal reports of emotions and feelings in humans. Thus, practical work in the laboratory or field is an essential part of an education in psychology.

Important note:

The regulations listed below apply to students enrolling in their first undergraduate or postgraduate degree at Auckland after 2005. New undergraduate students should also ensure they are familiar with the General Education requirements.

Transition students (students currently enrolled in a degree at Auckland before 2006 and not yet completed) should refer to the Transition Regulations for requirements.

Stage I courses

If you are intending to major in Psychology you will need to complete PSYCH 108 and PSYCH 109 at Stage I level. These courses are prerequisites for courses offered in Psychology at Stages II and III. 15 points from a Stage I Statistics course is also required to enrol in Stage III courses.

 

BSc - Psychology requirements

First or single major:

  • at least 60 points from PSYCH 303-364, SPORTSCI 304

Second major:

  • at least 45 points from PSYCH 303-364, SPORTSCI 304

Note: Students intending to continue to postgraduate level in Psychology should consult The University of Auckland Calendar as some postgraduate degrees require an additional fourth Stage III research methods course.

Postgraduate Psychology

Important note:

BSc(Hons) - Psychology requirements

Prerequisite: A major in Psychology and at least 90 points at Stage III including PSYCH 306

Requirements:

  • 45 points: PSYCH 788 Dissertation

and

  • 75 points from PSYCH 701-762

or

  • 60 points from PSYCH 701-762 and a further 15 points, subject to approval by the Head of Department, from 700 level courses in a related subject

It is also possible to study Psychology as part of a BA(Hons) degree.


PGDipSci - Psychology major requirements

Prerequisite: A major in Psychology, or equivalent.

Requirements:

  • 120 points from PSYCH 691, 701-762

or

  • 105 points from PSYCH 691, 701-762 and a further 15 points, subject to approval by the Head of Department, from approved 600 or 700 level courses in related subjects


MSc - Psychology requirements

Prerequisite: A BSc(Hons) or PGDipSci in Psychology and PSYCH 306.

Requirement:

  • 120 points: PSYCH 796 Thesis in Psychology

It is also possible to study Psychology as part of the MA degree.

Career opportunities

Many avenues open up to graduates with training in psychology. Registered psychologists work in many aspects of mental health care, and clinical psychology. Jobs are available in the business environment involving the use of psychological tests, statistical analyses, or survey and questionnaire development. Staff recruitment, personnel training and evaluation are also areas which employ a lot of psychology graduates. Research careers can be developed in neural function and cognitive science.
