- By 31 May, please review and update your Discovery Profiles using the Te Waka Huia Rangahau | Research Outputs system.
- Use the Profile Review Checklist as a guide of the activities to complete as you review and enhance your profile.
- On 7 June, the University Directory will be fully decommissioned and will no longer be accessible or visible inside or outside of the University, Discovery Profiles will replace the externally facing elements of University Directory.
Dr Cushla Maree McGoverin
PhD (Chemistry), University of Otago
Biography
I studied dairy products and pharmaceuticals with Raman spectroscopy for my PhD at the University of Otago (completed in 2008). I spent a further year at the University of Otago and worked on a series of spectroscopic applications for industry and other sectors. In late 2009 I travelled to Stellenbosch University, South Africa to join the Department of Food Science as a postdoctoral fellow. Here we were using near-infrared hyperspectral imaging to analyse cereals, primarily maize, wheat and sorghum. After Stellenbosch, I secured a postdoctoral research position at Temple University, Philadelphia, USA, where we were using mid- and near-infrared spectroscopies to study the growth of engineered cartilage and cartilage degradation in the context of osteoarthritis. I have now joined Dr Frederique Vanholsbeeck's team to analyse microbes with fluorescence spectroscopy.
Research | Current
Currently I am research fellow working on Foodsafe, a Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment funded project. We are developing a system based on fluorescence spectroscopy to accurately and rapidly determine bacterial concentration levels.
Areas of expertise
Raman spectroscopy
Near- and mid-infrared spectroscopy
