- By 31 May, please review and update your Discovery Profiles using the Te Waka Huia Rangahau | Research Outputs system.
- Use the Profile Review Checklist as a guide of the activities to complete as you review and enhance your profile.
- On 7 June, the University Directory will be fully decommissioned and will no longer be accessible or visible inside or outside of the University, Discovery Profiles will replace the externally facing elements of University Directory.

Research | Current
My research reflects my broad generic interest in marine ecology, and understanding the mechanisms underlying healthy functioning ecosystems.
My research interests are broad, ranging from larval dispersal and connectivity processes; marine spatial planning and marine protected area network design principles; disturbance and recovery dynamics in marine benthic communities; monitoring and predicting climate change impacts on marine systems; estuarine restoration (including shellfish and seagrass restoration, and mangrove management).
My research uses a combination of empirical research and modelling, with habitats including both rocky and soft sediments, and ranging from coastal and estuarine to the deep sea, and including temperate and tropical ecosystems. I believe strongly in applied science, and increasing communication between science and policy makers, such that best available science is incorporated into resource management and policy at local, regional, national and international levels.
Postgraduate supervision
Postgraduate research opportunities
- Larval and post-larval dispersal and connectivity of coastal and estuarine species, using a range of techniques including hydrodynamic modelling, population genetics, chemical techniques, and in situ sampling
- Mangrove seed dispersal and population connectivity (funded by a NIWA MBIE programme)
- Marine spatial planning and marine protected area network design, including design principles, biodiversity prioritisation (using Zonation or Marxan), social and economic analyses
- Ecosystem services in the Hauraki Gulf
- Climate change impacts on coastal and estuarine systems, including impacts of changing temperature, sea-level and wave climate on benthic communities
- Mangrove management, with planned projects on: nutrient cycling in mangrove ecosystems; carbon sequestration in mangrove ecosystems; recovery times of benthic communities after mangrove removal (all linked to a NIWA MBIE programme)
